A New Swaging Machine Takes the Swaging Process to the Next Level
Swaging is a metal forming process that uses compressive forces to deform and manipulate the shape of a workpiece by forcing it into a die. The resulting shape of the workpiece takes on similar dimensions as the die into which it is forced, and excess material is removed from the workpiece afterward. A swaging machine uses a set of two or four dies to perform this swaging process, which is also known as rotary swaging or rotatable swaging. The two or four dies are mounted on a spindle inside of a cage of rollers. As the spindle rotates, the hammers within each pair of dies strike against the rollers in a continuous cycle to swage the workpiece.
Rotary swaging machines are generally used for reducing tube diameter, producing a tapered end, or adding a point to a cylindrical workpiece. It is a cold working process and works best with aluminum, copper, or thin steel. This type of swaging machine is a great option for producing hose couplings and hose end bells, but is also capable of swaging external profiles and internal mandrels as well.
A new swaging tool called the hilmor Compact Swage Tool takes the swaging process to the next level. This hand-held tool has the power to swage copper tubing up to 1-5/8″, and the control needed to do the job properly without cracking or damaging the copper. The tool is lightweight and easy to operate.
To use the hilmor Compact Swage Tool, insert a coupling into one of the dies and a hose into the pusher. Lubricate the inner bore surfaces of both dies with a light coating of lightweight oil and start swaging. When finished, the swage will be tight, secure and ready to use.
The swaging tool is designed to be easy to operate, so there is no need for a highly skilled operator. This allows several swaging machines to be manned by a single worker and reduces the need for inventory of different sizes of couplings, tubing and hose. It is a great tool for anyone looking to increase their productivity and reduce on-the-job fatigue.
This swaging tool is fast, easy to use and can swage soft copper with very little pressure on the handle. The swaging tool can be adjusted to a variety of pipe size combinations, and it can even be used on copper tubing with an outside diameter as large as 3″. The hilmor tool has multiple head options that fit each size of pipe, and the user simply pumps the handle until the desired swage is achieved.
In addition to its general industrial applications, the swaging machine is often utilized by the military for the formation of items like gun barrels and anti-tank rocket tips. Additionally, swaging machines are commonly found in the automotive industry for the production of components such as wire rope cable assemblies and emergency brake cables. Lastly, the renewable energy sector utilizes swaging machines to produce items such as cartridge heaters and superconducting rod.
