Thermal Paste Application – A Step-By-Step Guide
Thermal paste is one of the most essential components for any computer. It fills the gaps between the CPU and heat sink and ensures a proper contact. Without it, the CPU will overheat and slow down. It is also very inexpensive. However, many PC builders and upgraders make common mistakes when applying it.
Most of these errors are due to a bad application method. Incorrect application can lead to a poor contact between the CPU and the heat sink and even to overheating or damaged components. It is therefore important to use a correct and reliable method for applying the thermal paste. This article will discuss the different methods available and give you a step-by-step guide for laying down the best possible thermal paste on your new or upgraded CPU.
The first thing that needs to be done is the preparation of the surfaces to apply the thermal paste on. First, you will need to clean the heat sink and the CPU with a non-linting cloth soaked in isopropyl alcohol. Make sure that you don’t touch the surface with bare fingers as they will transfer their natural oils onto the surface of the CPU, potentially damaging it. A pair of latex gloves is a good idea too, as they will protect your hands from the heat of the CPU.
The next thing to do is squeeze out a small dot of the thermal paste onto the center of the CPU, a dot no larger than a grain of rice or two. Then, using the latex gloved finger, gently spread the thermal paste evenly across the entire surface of the CPU. It’s a good idea to hold the processor up to a light and check that there are no areas that have been missed. If so, then apply more thermal paste to those areas.
