The French word ‘pilou’ means ‘round-dance’, and this was the name for the dance
performed by Kanaks in New Caledonia. These dances, accompanied by a chant, tell
Kanak stories of births, weddings and battles, and were a great way for people to
celebrate.
It is a round-dance with many people dancing together around a central pole or
straw, hopping on one foot while stamping the other, and clapping their hands in
unison at times. The dance is very energetic and sometimes includes a climax when
all the dancers shout ‘pilou pilou’ in unison.
The music of the original dance was written by Justin Clerice, uncle of illustrator
Victor, in 1907. Rather than reflecting the traditional choreography of the Kanaks, it
is a slow oom-pah march with lots of brass and a few cheery dance movements. Pyjama Pilou pilou homme
